The Inportance of Keyword
Research
Keyword selection is
the first step in search engine optimisation. It's also
where most people go wrong. If you choose a keyword that
is not used by the people hunting for your product, you
won't get traffic. You must pick popular keywords to be
found.
Don't Pick Single
Word Phrases
If you optimise for a keyword phrase consisting of 2-3 words,
you increase your chances that your site will be found.
Yes, the keyword popularity will be less than for a single
word, but the phrase will be more focused and your traffic
will be more relevant.
Do not use Gut Feel
Keyword phrases
A common pitfall is to start the website optimisation exercise
with a set of "gut-feel" keyword phrases. Site
owners often come up with 'common sense looking' key phrases,
which though look obvious, may not match with the ones your
buyers are using as their search term. Very often, being
from within the trade narrows the vision and you tend to
assume that trade-specific terms are easily understood and
popularly used. Not so. You need to think out of the box.
Make It Relevant
Another rule to keep in mind when selecting keywords is
to make sure they are relevant for your site. Don't just
pick something in the top 100 searches. The more relevant
the keyword phrase the more relevant your traffic is.
Local Keyword phrases
The key is: put yourself into the mind of a customer. People
wanting an accountant don't use a company across the country;
they use a local accountant
Use more than One
Keyword Phrase
Don't base your whole site on just one keyword phrase. Each
page should be optimised for different tow or three keyword
phrases making each page ain your website a point of entry.
Choose the right keyword phrases
and you are well on your way to bringing targeted qualified
visitors to your site. Pick the wrong words and you've just
sabotaged your entire optimization campaign
